About
Westwind Double Reed

Precision reed making tools for
oboe and English horn since 1992

"Ever since our meeting in
New York many years ago,
I have continued to be
impressed by Bob Hubbard's commitment to precisely
engineered shaper tips that
are virtually indestructible.
I especially like the way
the ears flow
smoothly
into the body of the shaper, enabling
greater ease of use
and a more consistent result."

Joe Robinson
Former Principal Oboe
New York Philharmonic;
Distinguished Visiting Professor
of Oboe, Lynn University

About this chart

No comparison chart can ever tell the full story, but we think we've found
a better approach. While most shaper tip comparison charts start from the
wide end of the shape, our charts compare the shapes from the spot where
the cane closes at the top of the wrap so you can do more meaningful
side-by-side comparisons at the most critical measurement points:
tip, belly, and throat.

In the charts above, shaper tip widths are ranked generally from narrow-
to-wide across all tips. Because each tip has unique differences in the
curve of the shape and the rate of the taper, these charts help you identify
and test multiple tips with similar measurements. Measurements are shown
in tenths of a millimeter to protect proprietary information. Noticeable
differences, however, show up in the hundredths and sometimes
thousandths of a millimeter.

These charts compare Westwind shaper tips as well as several other
popular brands and models. The measurements reflect actual data collected
from real tips measured by Westwind on an extremely accurate
measurement device.

Wide or Narrow?

A wider tip will give you a
fatter sound in the bottom of
the range while a narrower tip
will give you more control in
the upper octaves, but
there's a world of subtle
difference in the middle...
and much depends upon
your unique requirements.

We measure
from the wrap

Our charts compare the shapes
from the spot where the cane
closes at the top of the wrap.
That's about 5.1 mm wide for
Oboe and 6.0 mm for English
Horn, which are typical
wrap points for Loree staples.

Even if you use a different
staple our approach will
still make it easier to
compare shapes.
