Deluxe waterstone

$26.99
Qty:

Made from cerium oxide abrasive, are among the finest available.

We have found that an edge achieved with a 1200 grit stone, which is sharp enough to shave with, is sufficiently sharp for reed making requirements. We also think it is an excellent match for the Westwind Reed Knife. This stone will cut much faster than a Western oil stone, and produce a cleaner edge.

  • Grit: #1200
  • Size: 8" x 2.5" x 1.25"

About Japanese Waterstones

In Japan, the art of woodworking has been raised to an extraordinary level of skill. For several thousands of years, master woodworkers have sharpened their tools with natural stones using water as a lubricant. In recent times, the advent of synthetic abrasives and the technology to bind the particles has led to a new breed of sharpening stones; the synthetic waterstones.

Synthetic waterstones are manufactured from a variety of extremely sharp abrasives fused together by a process which creates a friable surface. This is important because as a tool is rubbed on a stone, the particles of abrasives on the surface are rounded over and dulled. In oil stones, the particles of abrasive are tightly packed and bound together. As a result, the dulled surface particles are worn away at a very slow rate, reducing the cutting effect of the stone. On the other hand, the friable surface of the waterstones keep fresh, sharp abrasive on the surface, thus optimizing the cutting effect.
